Very sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Hope he's on the mend.
One of the things that's impressed upon you working in an emergency department is how quickly and dramatically life can change: a man dies at a wedding reception after choking on a chicken breast so thoroughly lodged in his airway that the doctor must brace himself against the hospital stretcher to pull it out; a father playing soccer with his children in the backyard collapses and dies of a heart attack despite receiving CPR from his neighbour, a physician; a man showering after a jog slips in the tub, is knocked unconscious and drowns.
